Periodontics

Do your gums bleed?

Periodontics is the speciality of dentistry dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) and peri-implant diseases (mucositis and peri-impoantitis), i.e. the tissues surrounding the teeth and dental implants, respectively.

The main cause of these diseases is the accumulation of bacteria in the gums, which generate an inflammatory reaction. Gingivitis and mucositis are reversible diseases, whereas periodontitis and peri-implantitis involve bone loss and are therefore irreversible pathologies.

However, there are certain risk factors that are directly related and worsen the course of these diseases, such as smoking, diabetes, or others.

Control of risk factors and plaque control by the patient and the practitioner are essential to achieve good long-term outcomes.

Therefore, our team carries out a preliminary study to assess the severity and extent of the initial situation based on the recording of clinical parameters, periapical X-rays and a bacteriological test to identify the agents or bacteria that are contributing to the progression of this disease. Based on our diagnosis we draw up a personalised treatment plan in order to combat periodontitis.

Aesthetics

Whitening: Do you want white teeth?

It is a treatment that allows us to change the brightness of our teeth while at the same time being conservative with the hard tissues. It can be carried out on vital teeth (when we want to change the colour of our teeth in a general way) and also on non-vital teeth (when we are talking about those cases in which we have one or some teeth that are much darker than the rest as a result of previous trauma). Whitening can be done in the dental clinic or at home, under the supervision and following the guidelines of the dentist. For in-clinic treatment, a protective barrier must be placed at the gum level to avoid discomfort during the procedure. The session lasts approximately 30 minutes and if necessary, a second application can be carried out in another session. In some cases we can combine both treatments, depending on the needs of each case. The most common active ingredients are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Finally, it is important to note that this treatment could be used to change the colour and brightness or as a complementary treatment prior to treatment with ceramic restorations.

Do you want to have a new smile?

It is possibly one of the treatments that allows us to make changes in the aesthetics of our patients, not only in the shape but also in the colour. It is a minimally or non-invasive treatment in which a minimal preparation of the front face of the tooth is carried out, or in some cases it can be carried out without any preparation or wear of the tooth. There are two types of veneers. Ceramic veneers are the result of design and manufacturing work by a ceramic technician who sculpts the ceramic layer by layer following the dentist’s instructions to achieve a restoration that not only offers strength but also beauty. Composite or resin veneers are usually made by our dental aesthetics specialist directly from a previous design. They are also resistant, but perhaps a little less durable than ceramic veneers in terms of their brightness. Normally this treatment begins with a first visit where, after digital and photographic measurements are taken, the patient is presented with a mock-up or prototype of the future veneers. This allows the patient to visualise the project of the new veneers integrated into the face before the treatment has even begun. After the patient’s approval, we start the minimal preparation of the teeth, take measurements and place a temporary veneer. On a second visit, our team will cement the veneers onto the previously prepared teeth. From this day on you can enjoy your new smile.

Prosthesis

Fixed prosthesis

This is one of the dental specialities that allows us to replace a space between teeth (fixed bridge). In other cases we can restore the function of a single tooth (crowns or caps). All our prostheses are made of zirconium and different ceramics (metal-free).

Removable prosthesis

It allows to restore the masticatory function of fully or partially edentulous spaces (partial or complete dentures).

Implant-supported prostheses

In most cases we offer metal-free prostheses. In cases where the patient already has implants, but no prosthesis, we can carry out prosthetic rehabilitation, subject to clinical and radiological assessment.

Orthodontics

Invisible aligners

By means of transparent aligners (invisible orthodontics) this is one of the dental specialities in which we can align your teeth, achieving the smile you have always wanted, without sacrificing aesthetics at any time.

During the first visit, our team will take a series of photos and digital dental records, as well as X-rays, in order to carry out an accurate study of the case. In a second visit, we can explain the treatment and the estimated treatment time. Once we have the patient’s approval, in a third visit, we will start the treatment.

Not limiting at mealtimes, as they can be taken off and put back on again when finished.

At what age should I take my child to the orthodontist for the first time?

Ideally, the first visit to the orthodontist is usually made at around 6 years of age. At this age there is still time to correct and guide the child’s maxillary and mandibular development.

Chronology of orthodontic treatments:

1) from 3 to 6 years of age: PREVENTIVE treatment; the aim is to eliminate the bad habits of childhood that deform the position of the teeth.
2) from 7 to 11 years: interceptive treatment; it is aimed at facilitating the natural eruption of the permanent teeth and improving the structure of the maxillary bones.
3) from 12 years of age onwards: CORRECTIVE treatment; this is indicated when all the permanent teeth have erupted. It is also the type of treatment followed by adults.

How long does orthodontic treatment last?

The average duration of an orthodontic treatment is usually 2 years. However, it varies from case to case. There are cases in which several problems need to be treated, thus lengthening the process, but there are cases in which only a slight malposition needs to be treated, which can be corrected in a few months.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

It can be uncomfortable, especially in the first few weeks and 2-3 days after check-ups and adjustments at the orthodontist’s office. However, in no case does it cause intense pain.

At what age can braces be fitted?

The 6-year check-up is perfect for detecting any type of malocclusion, crowding and other defects in the mouth. These types of problems are best treated if detected early, as children’s mouths are more manageable as they are in a growth spurt. However, it is never too late to start orthodontic treatment!

Dental implants

Dental implants are titanium screws that, once placed in the mouth, will perform the function of the missing tooth.

With dental implants we can replace one or more teeth, allowing the patient to recover their masticatory and aesthetic function. We have protocols and technology that in many cases allow us to place the implant and the tooth on the same day (immediate loading). If this is not possible, we have highly aesthetic materials for the creation of temporary dentures that will serve as temporary teeth until the final crown is fitted. Last but not least, all our cases are planned through 3D radiodiagnostic studies, ensuring that every detail is covered prior to implant placement.

We want to give you peace of mind and security. Dental implants are the solution for the replacement of missing teeth, where no one will notice that you are wearing an implant, let alone a new crown or dental cap.

Bone regeneration

The loss of teeth will in turn generate bone loss, both horizontally and vertically, and in many cases this can make it difficult to place dental implants in ideal conditions. Therefore, prior to a 3D radiological study and a clinical assessment, our team assesses the bone conditions where the placement of dental implants is planned and, if necessary, will propose a treatment to the patient that includes the placement of new bone and even growth factors obtained from the patient’s blood, in order to have sufficient bone volume for the placement of dental implants.

Endodontics

What does endodontics consist of?

Endodontics is the area of dentistry dedicated to the prevention and treatment of pulp or dental nerve alterations and their repercussions on the periapical or supporting tissues of the tooth. Endodontic therapy consists of the removal of the dental pulp or nerve, accompanied by a correct disinfection of the root canals (where the nerve is housed) and their three-dimensional obturation to prevent bacterial colonisation that could lead to infection. Given the different causes that can trigger irreversible nerve damage, it is important to see a specialist as soon as possible for the appropriate assessment and treatment, thus avoiding complications or tooth loss.

Surgery

Our team has innovative techniques for carrying out the different procedures: – extractions of third molars or wisdom teeth; – extractions of teeth included; – extractions of temporary teeth or milk teeth; – simple extractions. In all cases it is necessary to have, as a minimum, periapical x-rays and for more complex cases an orthopantomography and 3D x-rays. We also offer a conscious sedation service, performed by an anaesthetist, to reduce stress and tension for the patient during treatment.

Paediatric Dentistry

Prevention for children

We offer care for the youngest members of the family. Our team is ready to educate them in the prevention of dental caries and gum disease. For the prevention of dental caries, topical applications of fluoride are carried out and on some occasions we seal pits and fissures. In those cases in which we have to treat caries, we use an atraumatic technique based on the chemical-mechanical elimination of the caries; for this we use Papacárie®, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and acts by softening the carious dentine, avoiding in many cases the use of the noisy rotary instrument, which is not very pleasant. The key to preventing gum disease is correct toothbrushing, which must be adapted according to the age of the child. We also carry out orthodontic and orthopaedic studies to assess dental malpositions. Finally, we also offer treatments with conscious sedation by an anaesthetist for those children who require it.
